英國1845年的一項法律(制定法)規定在其他法律與司法文件中引用該法律時，可直接使用其簡略名稱，這一作法開創了用簡略名稱指代議會制定法的先河，其後基本遵循這一作法。但也有議會制定法並無簡略名稱。1896年《法律簡稱法》〔Short Titles Act〕對議會制定的2 076件法律給予了簡略名稱，1948年《制定法修訂法》〔Statute Law Revision Act〕又對158件議會制定的法律給予了簡略名稱。如今，依據上議院的命令，每一個法案須包含一節規定其簡略名稱。但仍有許多法律無簡略名稱，這樣在其他法律中出現或在司法文件中援用時須使用全稱，其形式為「××王在位××年該屆議會之制定法第×章之標題×」，如「An Act of the session of the 5th and 6th years of the reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, chapter 52, intituled, 『An Act to Indemnify Witnesses who may give Evidence before the Lords Spiritual and Temporal on a Bill to exclude the Borough of Sudbury from sending Burgesses to serve in Parliament.』」。
